Founded in the late 1960s, ArcelorMittal - Georgetown
manufactures steel wire rod products. The wire rods are used to make
low-carbon fine wire drawing, wire ropes, tire cord, high-carbon machinery,
and upholstery springs. The ArcelorMittal unit has production capacity of a
million tons of liquid steel and three-quarters of a million tons of wire
rod annually. The former Georgetown Steel has undergone plenty of changes in
this decade. In 2003 it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and soon
ceased production. The former International Steel Group (ISG) purchased the
remains of Georgetown Steel the next year for $18 million. And in 2005
Mittal bought ISG, making Georgetown a part of its US operations.
